How Sanjay F. Gupta is Making Movies Sexy

By Rosalie Leung

Sanjay Gupta has been out of the movie scene for nearly three years due to an accident that nearly took his life, but is now back in business and picking up exactly where he left off. Gupta plans to follow up his recent hit “Kaante” with another hit movie containing western themes. In his next film “Musafir”, Gupta plans to bring sex out of the closet with mainstream stars such as Sunjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, and Mahesh Manjrekar playing the lead roles. Even actor Anil Kapoor, who has a mainly conservative image, will be playing a raunchy character in the new film.

The film was inspired by American films like Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction and just like Kim Basinger’s sexy character, “Musafir” focuses on a “femme fatale who uses her sexuality to get where she wants to, and not just with one man.” While Gupta admits the movie opens the door to the bedroom, he stresses that it is not a pornographic film, but rather, a “crime caper about murder and betrayal with sex as the backbone.”

Sill, Gupta is fearful about the issue of censorship by the Indian government. Although he does not believe his movie is overly sexual, he realizes that it includes more sex than Indian audiences are used to and thus may be a likely target for censorship after it is released in theatres.

Mostly however, Gupta is optimistic about his new film with a western slant, and when asked about how he thought Indian audiences would react to the steamy characters in his movie, he simply replied, “Kannte worked, didn’t it?”
