Tony Leung
By Sara Stokoe
Tony Leung Chiu-wai was born in Hong Kong on June 27, 1962. Now, at the age of forty, he is one of the most sought after actors in all of Eastern Asia.
Leung began his career working for the television station TVB, where he was the host of a childrens program. After playing roles in several series, Leung gained regional popularity.
He has established himself as an extremely versatile actor, unable to be type-cast in the East Asian entertainment industry. In the 1994 film Ashes of Time, Leung played a knight tragically going blind, day by day. Then, in 1997, he played a man facing exile due to sexual discrimination for his homosexuality in Happy Together. And just last year, Leung played Yan, an undercover cop who infiltrates a notorious gang, and yearns to regain his normal, moral life in Infernal Affairs.
As if all this success were not enough, Tony is also a successful musical recording artist.
