Miri Yu is Korean-Japanese and was born and raised in Yokohama, Japan in 1968. Her parents were ethnic Korean, but were born, raised and lived their entire adult lives in Japan. Being a child of a broken home in Japan brands one with a strong negative social stigma, and consequently Yu lived turbulent teen years as a runaway from home and school. The now thirty-four year old writers dark pieces, which are often considered Japanese despite her Korean ethnicity, are undoubtedly influenced by the despair and street violence that she was witness to during her chaotic youth in Japan.
